What Is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy?

PELVIC FLOOR PHYSIOTHERAPY TREATMENT FOR:

Women's Pelvic Health

Leaking, frequent bathroom trips, bowel and bladder issues, pelvic organ prolapse, and more, are completely treatable.  Don’t buy the myth that these problems are a normal part of  childbirth or ageing. Sexual Pain

Sexual pain (or other sexual challenges) is multifaceted and can leave you feeling desperate, hopeless, or ashamed.  Our empathetic and trauma informed physiotherapists have helped many women overcome complex sexual conditions – such as vaginismus, dyspareunia, and more.  We take a biopsychosocial approach to treatment and understand the sensitive nature of your situation.

Pregnancy & Postnatal Care

DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT.

Here’s what our clients are saying:

Ibbie takes what could possibly be an embarrassing or uncomfortable situation and turns it into a very professional and tremendously helpful experience. She is knowledgeable, professional and works with you to meet your goals. Her explanations are so clear and concise. Being a physiotherapist myself I learned much more than I ever expected. She has empowered me to take my pelvic health into my own hands which has been invaluable.

I was very comfortable with talking about my intimate pelvic floor issues as well as doing the exercises with my therapist’s guidance. I will be going back after I deliver my second child to make sure I regain my body and everything stays where it should. I only wish I had found them sooner!

I first came to The Mama’s Physio about 17 weeks pregnant with pelvic pain. As an athletic person the pain was hindering my ability to stay active during my pregnancy. Diana and the staff at The Mama’s Physio were so welcoming. Diana was able to help elevate some of my pain, provide me with stretches, exercises and help me to set realistic goals around physical activity during my pregnancy.  Postpartum, Diana helped me to regain strength in my pelvic floor and provide me with guidance regarding returning to physical activity. My pregnancy journey was made more positive  thanks to The Mama’s Physio.

Hello Mama’s Physio. I just wanted to say thank you for the pelvic floor care I received at your clinic. In 1989, I suffered a traumatic, life threatening miscarriage with injury to the bladder.  I struggled with severe hip pain and embarrassing bladder issues.  I had spent years doing Kegels assuming that this would help. It was at your clinic that I learned that I had too much tension not too little in the pelvic floor – whoops too many Kegels.  With the care and direction of your therapist Diana Blaney, I have seen substantial improvement on both counts.  My only regret is not having known about pelvic floor physiotherapy years ago.  I have been telling my story of recovery to other women I meet.  Many women report also struggling with post-pregnancy and aging pelvic issues but have been unaware of pelvic floor physiotherapy.  Somehow, the message of this important treatment needs to get out to women across London. Thank you again for the excellent care your clinic provided to me.

My visits at Mama’s Physio, and working with Carla Huls, completely changed my perspective of women’s health, especially post-pregnancy. About five years after my third child, I felt a heaviness in my anterior pelvis and started to worry that something may be prolapsing. How could this happen five years after giving birth with no signs otherwise, and what could I do about it? Thankfully, I mentioned this in conversation to a good friend who recommended Mama’s Physio. After working with Carla, I regained control of my pelvic floor. The education and treatments I received connected my brain to my body in a way that will benefit me indefinitely. My only complaint from this experience is against our health care system. Why aren’t we all prescribed visits for pelvic physiotherapy before and after child birth? Thanks, Mama Physio, and especially Carla, for working with me!

I recommend every post-partum woman to try pelvic floor physio at The Mama’s Physio. Talking to someone about issues such as incontinence, pain during sexual intimacy, pain during bowel movement, separated abdominal muscles and the such can be extremely embarrassing! However at The Mama’s Physio, the therapists take time to listen without judgment, help you understand what you are going through, and then teach you ways to work on those issues to get back to your pre-pregnancy body. Not only was Eliza, my therapist, empathetic, knowledgeable, and evidence-based, but Kate, the receptionist, was super welcoming too. The facilities are beautiful and peaceful, with a couch, tea and sweets to make you feel at home as soon as you enter. If you can’t leave your children at home, no problem! A playroom is available, and Kate will even hold your crying newborn while you are with your physio – yep, happened to me!

I came to Ibbie in October 2015 after being diagnosed with pelvic organ prolapse. I was experiencing pretty constant discomfort and was unable to stand or walk for more than 15 min at a time without significant pain. Lifting my grandchildren was out of the question for me. By December, I was symptom free. Not only did Ibbie devise an effective physical therapy plan for me, she treated me with optimism, sensitivity and respect. I am so grateful to her and recommend her highly.

I had no idea what to expect when I called to set up an appointment at The Mama’s Physio. All I knew was I needed to do something to support my postpartum body and spirit. I was greeted on the phone by Kate, and she was incredibly kind and easy to talk to. I was treated with respect and discretion.

Sophia was my PT and I can’t say enough good things about her. Pelvic floor physio is such a sensitive, intimate and emotional thing and I was met with kindness, autonomy, and care. I was asked for my consent and comfort level for anything that we were doing and she talked through any procedure involving touch. I visited Sophia for many months and my whole world has changed. I am feeling stronger and more confident and was given tools to continue my pelvic floor strengthening.

I recommend The Mama’s Physio and Sophia to anyone that will listen. It really has changed my whole world. Thank you so much Sophia (and Kate too!) for such a beautiful experience! Know that you are making such an impact on women’s lives every single day!

Mama’s Physio changed my life! The education and exercises Eliza provided were life changing. I can now work out without leaking, or experiencing pain. Thank you!

When I was pregnant, I knew pelvic floor physio was for me. I understood its importance. I looked for a place that didn’t just offer physio but also made you feel empowered and safe. As a new mom, life is totally turned upside down and your self identity changes so much, its nice to have a space that supports you and helps you find your body again.

I will be forever grateful for my time with you. You made me welcomed, heard, comfortable, accepted, and your words and support gave me the gift of feeling empowered in my body and as a mother. And if you are reading this as someone considering pelvic floor physiotherapy, whether as a mama-to-be, or as a woman in any stage of life, I cannot recommend it enough!

I’ve been meaning to send you an email for a while now to let you know how happy I was with my appointments with Carla.  She made me feel so comfortable in a potentially less-than comfortable situation, and I really appreciated the time she allowed me to deal with my newborn (wow I can’t believe he’s almost 1 already). She took the time to understand my personal health and encourage me in that. She is an excellent communicator and helped me to understand how pelvic health plays a role in my overall health and was excellent at teaching me how to do the necessary exercises properly.  Thanks for running such a great office and for helping so many women! I always recommend you to friends when I have the opportunity.
