Health & Birth
“An evidence-informed approach to practice can be defined as the integration of research evidence alongside practitioner expertise and the people experiencing the practice. Blending knowledge from different sources is an inclusive and useful approach because knowledge is personal, context driven and evolving. This type of approach also allows for innovation and adaptation based on factors and context at individual, organisational and service levels, while reducing biases.” Source
The above quote summarizes how I endeavour to approach my clinical practice. I regularly adapt how I practice based on high quality research. At the same time, I do not disregard clinical experience, practitioner intuition, and the lived experiences of my clients.
I find the world of research to be fascinating, ever evolving, and sometimes head-scratching. But it is encouraging that research evidence is finally catching up to what we in the field have known for a long time: pelvic health physiotherapy and biopsychosocial perinatal support significantly improves maternal health outcomes both pre and postnatally.
Still, there are more good research questions to ask and more work to be done. Most importantly we need to take what we already know from the body of evidence and allow it to actually transform how we practice.
I keep a running list of current research articles related to pelvic and perinatal health, birth work, obstetrics, pelvic anatomy and physiology, etc. Feel free to check out my NCIB Bibliography here.

I’m excited to almost be done. I have learnt so much through this course not only for pregnant women that I may assist one day but also for myself. I can’t wait to have my first visit with a pelvic floor physio. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

I found the mini workshop very informative. I had signed up to learn more about how I can support clients during the active second stage of their labours. In particular, for those clients who have done “push prep” work with pelvic floor physios prenatally. Prior to hearing your presentation, I wasn’t sure what info was being covered by pelvic floor physios with regards to second stage of labour. I was pleased to find out that I’m already doing a fair bit already in my routine practice that is protective of the pelvic floor. I look forward to try integrating the other things I learnt during your workshop

perinatal physiotherapist
It takes a village to come alongside families who are navigating the childbearing years – a healthcare village. I believe in working collaboratively with other professionals and disciplines; and I so value the diverse perspectives I gain from of varied practitioners.
let’s serve our mutual clients well.
Ibukun (Ibbie) is an Integrative Physiotherapist with a passion for women’s pelvic health and wellness. Her clinical expertise lies in perinatal rehabilitation and childbirth. She has been practising as a registered physiotherapist since 2007 and has worked in pelvic and perinatal health since 2012. Additionally, Ibukun is a certified childbirth educator and a certified birth and postpartum doula.
Ibukun’s work is anchored on a bio-psycho-social-spiritual foundation; it prioritizes holistic and integrative care; is trauma informed; it takes a salutogenic approach to health and birth; and is evidence informed.
For six years, Ibukun owned and directed a highly regarded pelvic physiotherapy practice – the largest pelvic health practice – in London, Ontario. She and her team of exceptional pelvic health physiotherapists treated clients with a wide variety of women’s pelvic health conditions. In 2022, she downsized and niched further to serve the perinatal population exclusively.
Ibukun is a sought after speaker and an educator with years of presenting and teaching under her belt. Most importantly, Ibukun is a proud mama of 5 beautiful children (ages 3-10 years old) who keep hands and heart full, and her life fun!

Pain Neuroscience Applied to Childbirth
This evidence-based course will enable learners to integrate pain science education into prenatal visits. It will also share strategies that can help patients modulate pain perception – both prenatally and during labour itself. Participants will leave feeling more confident with helping their pregnant patients to overcome fear and catastrophization, and to gain greater self-efficacy for better birth outcomes.
